Girls Volleyball Kill-er Season
October 14, 2019
Hampton Girls’ Volleyball consists of 6 girls on the court. All playing for one goal. Win the point. Win the set. Win the game.
This team has overcome many challenges thrown at them this season, HGV were projected to have a losing season this year. Graduated senior, Anastasia Russ, who now plays for the University of Pittsburgh, was a hard player to replace. New on the court, sophomore Claudia Braun and Kai Herchenroether bring a new fire to the varsity team. Returning seniors Grace Rydzack (captain), Claire Braun (captain), Katie Januck (captain), Maggie Laffin, Gillian Mulcahy, Jayden Davis, and Kyra Ribar show strength and resilience through tough games. As well as Juniors, Addie Syglowski, Julia Resch, Bridget Wojcik, Elaina Antosz, and Lily Obendorfer strengthen the varsity lineup.
The team also gained new coaches this year. The varsity head coach, Mike Hensen, had never taught a high school volleyball team before; however we can clearly see his talent through the girls 9-2 record. Captain Claire Braun states, “This year we have all noticed that it’s definitely a lot more intense with longer and harder practices. It has been really hard the past week on all of us with it being near the end of the season, but the intensity has clearly helped because our section record is the best it has ever been.”
The key to a strong team, especially in volleyball, is communication and team bonding which is built on and off the court. HGV has done many activities outside of the gym, including yoga, hiking, and kayaking. Perhaps this has given them a leg up in this competitive section, as HGV has been at the top of the rankings all year with huge wins over Mars and Central Valley.
Congratulations on your season, girls, and keep up the hard work!
