Well, I think it’s safe to say that Hampton won’t remember the Titans.

Shaler came into Hampton expecting a blowout but what they got was a Talbot team that determined to avenge last year’s loss against the Titans. Both teams came into Week 2 with conference wins in from Week 1. The Titans were led by their seniors QB Darin Mizgorski and RB Jake Miller. Each tore the Talbots’ defense and totaled to 309 yards of total offense. Mizgorski would compete 19 of his 36 passes for 183 yards. Jake Miller would rush the ball 16 times for 108 yards to lead the game in rushing yards. WR Joey Impavido would catch the ball 5 times for 73 yards in Shaler’s loss.

Hampton, on the other hand, felt all the confidence coming in and would not lose it even with two starters out with injuries. The Talbots would get off to a slow start defensively given up an opening drive touchdown at the 8:28 mark of the 1st quarter. But the Talbots would not be down for long as Ian Andersson would drive in for a 1-yard score at 2:15 mark of the 1st quarter; 7-7 after 1. So this game was one of the most entertaining games yet this year. In a high offensive, game defenses tend to get tired, and this game featured 5 lead changes. Shaler would regain the lead 14-7 with 2:51 to go in the half thanks to a 4-yard Jake Miller run. Matt Dematteo would add a field goal with 1 second to go in the half and it was 14-10 Shaler at the half.

Concern from the Hampton side came when starters Ian Andersson and Ben Horvat would come out with mid and lower body injuries. Both would not return to the game.

3rd quarter: 3 scores, 3 lead changes. Max Smith began the 2nd half scoring with a 90 yard touchdown kickoff return; 17-14 with 11:47 remaining in the 3rd. Next Joey Impavido would catch a 5-yard touchdown pass from Mizgorski and the Titans regained the lead 21-17. BUT WERE NOT DONE THERE! Luke Lindgren (remember that name) would rush for a 28 yard touchdown 24-21 HAMPTON 2:35 REMAINING IN THE 3rd QUARTER.

Lindgren in the 4th quarter added to the Hampton lead with a 1-yard TD run 31-24 with 8:00 remaining in the game. But Shaler would not go away. And they would not let Hampton forget they are capable of comebacks. With 17 seconds left Joey Impavido caught a 5 yard TD pass from Mizgorski to close the Talbot lead to 3. Shaler could not convert on the onside kick and Matt Dematteo knead it and the Talbots stole a win from Shaler 31-28.

Hampton travels to North Hills next week in a battle for first place in the Northern Conference!
